Sub-Zero Snooze/Refresh Message: What It Means and How to Clear It

Written byYuki TanabeRefrigeration technician — controls and sensors · 18 years in the trade

The Snooze/Refresh message on a Sub-Zero refrigerator means the water filter or the air purification cartridge is due for replacement. Snooze hides it for 24 hours; fitting the new part resets it for about a year.

Snooze/Refresh on the touch panel of a Sub-Zero Classic (CL) or Designer (DET, DEC) refrigerator is a maintenance reminder, not a breakdown. It lights up when either the water filter or the air purification cartridge has reached the end of its service life, which Sub-Zero puts at roughly one year for each. Touching Snooze quiets the reminder for 24 hours; fitting the new part and confirming it on the panel starts a fresh countdown of about a year. Nothing about the message affects cooling, so the food inside is fine while you order the part. In a Los Angeles kitchen it is still worth acting on soon, because that filter is the last step between city tap water and the ice in your glass.

Two parts share one reminder

The panel uses the same words for two unrelated consumables, which is why the message puzzles so many owners. One is the water filter that feeds the ice maker and, on dispenser models, the chilled water in the door. The other is the air purification cartridge, a small module in the fresh food section that treats the air moving around your produce. Each one keeps its own clock. Because both usually went in on the day the refrigerator was delivered, they tend to come due within days of each other, and a household that replaces only one sees the message return shortly after.

Before buying anything, check which item the display highlights alongside Snooze/Refresh. Our page on the water filter and air purification reminders shows how each is presented. If the panel leaves you guessing, the date of the last change settles it: whichever part has been in longer is the one asking.

What Snooze actually does

Snooze is a one-day mute and nothing more. It leaves the counter alone, so the reminder reappears the following day until the part is changed and the cycle restarted. Some families tap it every morning for months. That does no harm to the refrigerator, but it means the filter keeps working well past the volume it was built to handle.

Sub-Zero rates the Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) water filter for up to 750 gallons (2,839 liters) or twelve months, whichever comes first. A busy kitchen that pours a lot of cold water or empties the ice bin daily can hit the gallon figure early, so the panel’s timer is an estimate rather than a reading of how loaded the cartridge really is. The manufacturer says to replace the filter when any of these happen:

  • the indicator or the Snooze/Refresh message appears
  • flow from the dispenser, or into the ice maker, drops off
  • cubes come out hollow
  • a full twelve months have gone by since the last change

Hollow ice is the clue most people spot first. The ice maker fills its mold for a set length of time, so when a worn filter slows the water, less of it reaches the mold and the cube freezes as a thin shell around an empty middle.

The parts that clear it for good

The water filter

Most current and recent built-ins take the twist-in filter 4204490, which is interchangeable with the older number 9030868. Sub-Zero lists it for Classic (BI, CL) and Designer models including DEC and DET, along with the 648PRO, PRO3650 and PRO4850. Older Classic (BI) refrigerators deserve a second look: some take that same one-prong twist-in cartridge, while others use a two-prong push-in style. The two-prong microbiological filter 7023811 is no longer made, and the part that takes its place, 7045454, is rated for color, taste and odor rather than microbiological reduction. If your old filter was the microbiological type, know that its successor is a different kind of product.

The air purification cartridge

The air side uses cartridge 7042798, a direct replacement for the earlier 7007067. It fits every Sub-Zero equipped with air purification and is the only air filter in the unit, so there is nothing else to track down. A cartridge lasts about a year and scrubs ethylene and odors from the cabinet air every 20 minutes. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene, and that gas hurries along the decline of greens and other produce stored near it, so a spent cartridge tends to show up as lettuce that wilts sooner and smells that hang around.

The used cartridge contains a small mercury lamp. California treats mercury-bearing items as household hazardous waste, so take it to a city collection site rather than dropping it in the kitchen trash.

Changing a Classic filter and clearing the message

On a Classic (CL), the water filter sits behind the grille at the bottom of the unit. Sub-Zero’s sequence is short:

  1. Lift the grille from its bottom edge.
  2. Give the old filter a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it out.
  3. Remove the plastic cap from the new filter.
  4. Push the new filter in and turn it clockwise until it stops.
  5. Follow the prompts on the control panel to confirm the change, which starts the next year-long cycle.

A folded towel under the grille catches the few drops that leave with the old cartridge. Once the new one is seated, flush it before you trust the ice. On Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) models without a dispenser, throw out the first two full bins of ice; on dispenser models, run water from the door for two minutes. New carbon sheds fine dust and holds pockets of air, and the first water through carries both. The UC-15I undercounter ice maker only needs its first batch tipped out.

Refrigerators that never show the message

If your refrigerator has no Snooze/Refresh line at all, it may simply have no filter to nag about. According to Sub-Zero, none of these carry a cartridge inside the cabinet: the 500, 600, 700 and 200/300 Series, the UC-24 undercounter, DEU undercounter refrigeration, ID drawer models, and wine storage apart from the IW-30CI. The DEU1550I ice maker leaves the box without a filter too. Owners of those units, including many of the older Encino built-ins, who want filtered ice generally add a filter under the sink or on the supply line. If you are not sure which series is in your kitchen, our page on telling a 500 from a 600, a BI and the current Classic starts from the rating plate.

Legacy Classic (BI) units track their filter with an icon and a life monitor. If a BI filter has been bypassed with plug 7011209, or the twist-in filter has been taken out, press the white reset button to the left of the filter five times within seven seconds to switch the monitor off so it stops asking for a cartridge that is not there.

When the reminder is not the whole story

A fresh filter should restore full flow and solid cubes within a day or two. If it does not, the restriction lies elsewhere: a kinked or scaled supply line, a shutoff that is only partly open, or a water valve that is wearing out. Homes from Mar Vista to Larchmont Village see white crust on showerheads and kettles, a sign of how much mineral Los Angeles tap water carries. The Classic (CL) filter is tested against NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI 53, which covers taste and certain contaminants, but carbon does not soften water, so scale can keep building inside the valve year after year. The filter is also specified for a supply between 35 and 120 psi and water between 40°F and 100°F, so a kitchen line with weak pressure can starve the ice maker even with a brand-new cartridge.

Sorting out which of those it is takes a visit. Our $89 service call covers the trip and the complete diagnosis, and that amount is deducted from the repair as soon as you approve it. Work on an ice maker, water valve or supply line typically falls in the $270–$830 range, with a firm quote once the cause is confirmed.

One more thing the message is not: a cooling alarm. If the fresh food side feels warm while Snooze/Refresh is showing, the timing is a coincidence. Sub-Zero’s schedule calls for a condenser cleaning at six- to twelve-month intervals, with a shorter gap where pets shed, but the maker adds that a cabinet sitting over 48 degrees with the dial at 38 usually needs more than a cleaning to recover. At that point, call (310) 844-1973 rather than waiting for the next filter change.

Follow-ups

What does Snooze/Refresh mean on a Sub-Zero refrigerator?
It means the water filter or the air purification cartridge has reached the end of its roughly one-year life and should be replaced. The message appears on Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) touch controls, it is a reminder rather than a fault, and the refrigerator keeps cooling normally while it shows.
How long does pressing Snooze hide the message?
Pressing Snooze hides the reminder for 24 hours, and then it comes back. It does not touch the life counter, so the message will return every day until the due part has been swapped and the change confirmed on the control panel.
Can I keep snoozing it if the water still tastes fine?
You can, but taste is a poor gauge of how much life a filter has left. Sub-Zero's rating for that cartridge tops out at 750 gallons or twelve months, and flow usually slows before taste changes, which shows up as weak dispensing and hollow cubes. An overdue air cartridge simply stops cleaning the cabinet air.
Does the Snooze/Refresh message mean my Sub-Zero is not cooling?
No, the message has nothing to do with cooling. If the refrigerator is warm at the same moment, treat that as a separate problem. Per Sub-Zero, once the cabinet climbs past 48 degrees on a 38-degree setting, cleaning the condenser rarely brings it back, so book a diagnosis then.
Which water filter fits my Sub-Zero?
Most Classic and Designer built-ins, plus the 648PRO, PRO3650 and PRO4850, take twist-in filter 4204490, which is interchangeable with 9030868. Some legacy Classic (BI) units use a two-prong push-in style instead, where the discontinued 7023811 has been superseded by 7045454. Every model with air purification takes cartridge 7042798.
