The water filter and air purification reminders

The filter and air indicators are reminders rather than faults: one lights when the water filter has reached the end of its rated life, the other flashes when the air purification cartridge is due to be changed.

What the control is watching
Elapsed time and the water drawn through the cartridge, not the temperature of anything in the cabinet.
What makes it register
An air cartridge that has run about a year, or a water filter that has passed its rated volume or its twelve months, whichever arrives first.
Can you keep using it
Yes throughout. Neither reminder interrupts cooling, though dispensed water and the taste of new ice suffer first once a filter is well past due.

These two surface when a panel starts asking for something on a cabinet nobody had thought about in years. Neither reports a failure. One is a calendar for the cartridge on the back wall of the refrigerator, which deals with the ripening gas fruit gives off. The other meters the water going through to the ice maker and the dispenser.

The difference that matters is where the reset lives. The air cartridge clears from the control panel. The water filter does not: its reset sits behind the grille beside the housing, which is why a reminder still showing after a change usually had the wrong button pressed rather than a bad filter fitted.

What we usually find

  1. The air indicator still flashing on a panel a week after a fresh cartridge went in

A reset that never completed. The panel key has to be held for a few seconds rather than tapped, and the indicator only settles down once it has been. Nothing was wrong with the new cartridge.

  2. Reverse osmosis treatment under the sink and a Sub-Zero cartridge still in the manifold

Two filters in series, which the manufacturer asks you not to run. Where an RO system feeds the unit the cartridge comes out and the housing runs in bypass; until it does, output suffers.

  3. Slow water at the dispenser still slow after the filter was changed on schedule

The supply side rather than the consumable — a fill valve that no longer opens fully, or a line squeezed behind the cabinet when it was last pushed back into its opening.

Ice maker, water valve or supply line $270–$830

Which of these it is gets settled at the visit, before a part is ordered — Sub-Zero Repair Pro Los Angeles, (310) 844-1973.

Follow-ups

Does a lit filter indicator mean I should book a visit?
Not on its own. Both of these are owner-replaceable consumables, and the panel clears once the correct reset is held down. Book a visit when the reminder comes straight back on a new cartridge, or when fresh filtration makes no difference at all to what the dispenser and the ice maker are producing.
