VACUUM CONDENSER flashing is the warning built into 600 Series cabinets made before serial number 1810000. No number is attached and no code is stored behind it: the display simply names the maintenance job it wants done.
- What the control is watching
- How well heat is leaving the machine. This generation's troubleshooting guide is split throughout by whether these words flash while a compartment drifts warm.
- What makes it register
- Restricted airflow across the condenser above all. Sub-Zero's list runs from a clogged condenser through a loose or obstructed fan blade to a motor with no power.
- Can you keep using it
- For a few days, watching the temperatures. Once the words appear beside a compartment that is genuinely warming, food is on the clock.
There is something charming about a machine that names the chore instead of the fault: two words asking for a vacuum cleaner, and reading them literally is right more often than not.
SERVICE appears on this panel too, but on this generation that word belongs to the thermistors rather than the condenser. What the cabinet cannot do is store a numbered code for later — the words on the glass are the whole record.
Which is why the underrated case is the last one below: these words flashing while both compartments read normally. Nothing has happened to the food yet, which makes it the cheapest moment to look. In an Encino kitchen a high room ambient is on the manual’s own list of causes.
What we usually find
-
The words flashing on a cabinet whose condenser wears a grey felt of dust and pet hair
Precisely what the display asked for. Sub-Zero puts this cleaning on the owner's side: behind the grille, soft brush and vacuum, power off at the panel, every three to six months.
Quoted after the diagnosis
-
Flashing that comes back weeks after a thorough clean, compartments still holding
The condenser fan rather than the condenser — a blade fouling its housing, a nut backed off the shaft, or a motor that no longer turns when the compressor calls.
Evaporator or condenser fan motor $330–$750
-
The warning with a freezer that is climbing and a coil buried in frost
The defrost side borrowing the only warning this generation has. With no numbered code to separate them, heater and terminator get measured directly.
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $280–$640
-
Flashing with normal temperatures, a clean condenser and a fan that runs properly
The reading the manual saves for last on a machine that looks healthy: early signs of a sealed-system leak, settled at the gauges.
Compressor or sealed-system repair $1,510–$3,440

Follow-ups
- Does the warning clear itself once the condenser is clean?
- No. On this generation it is dismissed by switching the unit off at the panel and back on once the work is done, which doubles as a test: if the words return over the next few days, airflow was never the whole story. Sub-Zero Repair Pro Los Angeles, (310) 844-1973.
