EE where the freezer figure should be, with SERVICE flashing, is the control declining to print a temperature it cannot trust: the compartment sensor is disconnected, shorted or misreading.

- The freezer compartment sensor, and whether what comes back from it is a number the panel can honestly display.
- What makes it register
- That sensor going missing electrically — a parted lead, a short across it, or a value the control cannot accept as a temperature.
- Can you keep using it
- Sub-Zero lists this reading against compartments that are warm and compartments that are still normal, so the honest answer depends on the cabinet. Put a thermometer inside.
Two letters in place of a number is a design decision, not a message about damage. Sub-Zero would rather print nothing than print a figure it knows to be wrong, so when the freezer sensor stops making sense the display stops pretending.
That has one practical consequence worth acting on. Everything you would ordinarily use to judge the freezer — the number on the panel, the warnings that follow it — has left the conversation, and a thermometer on a shelf is the only measurement in the house.
What the letters do not tell you is where along the circuit the trouble is. They read the same whether a plug has backed out of the board, a lead has parted behind the liner, or the sensor has finished. That is decided with a meter, in the manufacturer’s order: connections first, resistance second, a part last.
